Taxpayers are frustrated and the IRS is aware but what can be done about staffing issues, paper correspondence piling up, and many other issues plaguing the IRS, an official federal government organization. Apparently, there are still millions of tax returns from last year that have yet to be reviewed and processed, reported NPR.
Eric Collins, an advocate at the National Taxpayer Advocate, says that the IRS’ budget has declined by about 20% in the past 10 years while the number of tax returns filed has gone up 13%. The agencies’ computers are the oldest major tech systems in the federal government”.
At the same time, the IRS’ workload has increased. In the last two years, it has had to distribute three rounds of COVID-19 assistance payments to eligible Americans as well as the expanded child tax credit.
